โรงเรือน EDEN-ISS ต่างจากโรงเรือนทั่วไปเพราะอยู่ในตู้คอนเทนเนอร์ขนาด 135 ตารางฟุต ไม่มีหน้าต่าง ควบคุมอุณภูมิตลอดเวลาแม้อุณหภูมิภายนอกจะต่ำกว่า -35 องศาเซลเซียส ไม่มีดินไม่มีแสงอาทิตย์แต่ได้แสงจากหลอดไฟ LED

เพียง 3 สัปดาห์หลังเริ่มปลูก สามารถเก็บเกี่ยวผักกาดแก้วได้ถึง 3.6 กิโลกรัม หัวผักกาด 70 หัวกับแตงกวาอีก 18 ลูก และที่สำคัญ รสชาติไม่ต่างจากผักที่ปลูกด้วยวิธีการทั่วไป นักวิทยาศาสตร์วางแผนปลูกผักผลไม้ 30-50 ชนิดรวมถึงมะเขือเทศกับสตรอว์เบอร์รี และตั้งเป้าเก็บเกี่ยวให้ได้สัปดาห์ละ 4-5 กิโลกกรัม

นักวิทยาศาสตร์เชื่อว่าหากสามารถปลูกผักผลไม้ในพื้นที่ที่มีสภาพอากาศเลวร้ายสุด ๆ ได้ การเพาะปลูกบนดวงจันทร์หรือดาวอังคารก็มีความเป็นไปได้ Deaniel Schubert ผู้จัดการโครงการ บอกว่าการปลูกผักผลไม้นอกโลก นอกจากเพื่อให้นักบินอวกาศได้กินผักผลไม้สดแล้ว ยังเป็นการเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับอนาคตที่มนุษย์อาจย้ายไปอยู่นอกโลกด้วย
